Burma portfolio on display in LES
Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 12:15AM
Windows Gallery in LES is showing selected images from the 'Letters to Burma' portfolio. This is the first time prints from the portfolio have been exhibited directly (previously only 20"x30" versions were shown).
Much work went into the portfolio to ensure that the prints were perfect, both from me and from my printer, Peter Milo.
Prints will be on display from December 20th to January 6th. Stop by the gallery at 37 Orchard St (between Grand and Canal). The Artist Reception is Sunday, December 26, 4-7pm.
Press release:
Windows Gallery is pleased to present a photograpy portfolio by Max Noy.
Few places in the world are more deserving yet infrequently visited as the ancient city of Bagan in Myanmar's Mandalay province. At the heart of it is a plain, roughly the size of Manhattan, filled with thousands of temples dating from 11th-13th centuries. Max Noy's "Letters to Burma" portfolio consists of a series of nine photographs touching on the people and the environment of this beautiful, optimistic, devout, traditional, welcoming, but politically-troubled and largely overlooked region.
Each portfolio contains nine individually numbered prints and a justification page signed by the photographer and printer, presented in a custom folder. Selected images from copy #2 (total of 5 issued) are currently on view. This is the first show of the prints from the portfolio. Large-scale images from the series have been shown previously in Park Slope in Brooklyn and in Long Island City.
The images are presented as part of a group show from December 20 through January 6. Artist reception will be held on Sunday, December 26th, 4-7pm.
Max Noy was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1980, grew up on the West Coast, graduated from University of Washington in Seattle (2001), and currently lives and works in New York City. He exhibits widely around New York City area.
Windows Gallery was established in 2010 with a mission of discovering and showcasing the best of emerging artists on the New York art scene. It is located in the heart of the Lower East Side gallery district, at 37 Orchard Street (between Grand and Canal).
